The Archaeology Department operates within the AMI Administrative, Technical and Museum Affairs Division. Our Prehistoric, Roman Period, Medieval, Modern, Numismatic, and Underwater Archaeology collections operate within the Archaeology Department. The department's core tasks are the investigation, collection, storage, and preservation of museum materials, managing and digitizing documentation, and conducting regular inventory revisions. The wealth of museum material consists of archaeological artefacts collected in the course of numerous systematic and rescue excavations performed across Istria.
The department leads and performs archaeological investigation: systematic, rescue, and trial excavations, archaeological supervision, and other types of field surveys, such as reconnaissance and reambulation. These activities, terrestrial and underwater, are performed across the all of Istra County.
The Department also organises exhibitions, lectures, conferences, and specialist symposia, and participates in research and specialist events. It is also engaged in specialist study and the preparation of general readership, specialist, and scholarly publications.
Archaeologists working in this department study material from the prehistoric, ancient, medieval, and post-medieval periods, with a significant portion of their work dedicated to numismatic finds and underwater archaeological discoveries in the waters around Istria. Their work continues a multi-decade tradition of investigating Istria while simultaneously developing new approaches to the protection and interpretation of archaeological heritage.
