The opera The Barber of Seville (1816) by Gioachino Rossini represents the culmination and conclusion of the development of opera buffa. The work is based on the comedy by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and is distinguished by its clearly structured musical-dramatic conception, a strong integration of music and stage action, and characteristic ensembles and finales that drive the dramatic progression.

The Barber of Seville is one of the most popular and frequently performed operas of all time, a permanent fixture in the operatic repertoire thanks to its melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality, and demanding vocal writing, particularly for coloratura mezzo-soprano, baritone, and bass.

The work is characterized by an exceptionally dynamic dramaturgy, in which the action unfolds through a series of rapid and often contrasting situations, supported by the constant interaction between solo and ensemble numbers. The musical language is marked by clearly defined characters, an economical use of recitative, and the gradual intensification of tension through the so-called Rossini crescendo. Ensembles, especially act finales, play a crucial role in shaping the musical flow and in the dramatic structuring of scenes. The work also demonstrates a high degree of synchronization between stage movement and musical structure, creating a strong connection between its narrative and musical layers. For these reasons, The Barber of Seville remains one of the fundamental works of operatic literature and a lasting model of operatic comedy.

The plot follows Count Almaviva, who arrives in Seville and attempts to win Rosina’s affection with a serenade, but without success. He meets Figaro, the resourceful barber who knows all the city’s secrets, and confides in him his love for Rosina. Figaro proposes a disguise-based plan to help him approach the young woman, who lives under the strict supervision of Doctor Bartolo. Meanwhile, Rosina manages to send a letter to “Lindoro” (Almaviva in disguise) and expresses her desire to escape. Bartolo and Don Basilio attempt to thwart the Count with slander and to hasten the marriage. Almaviva disguises himself as a drunken soldier and enters the house to make contact with Rosina, later also appearing in the second act as a music teacher. Figaro helps organize the escape, while Basilio is bribed to leave. Bartolo tries to convince Rosina that Lindoro is deceiving her, but Almaviva ultimately reveals his true identity. In the end, with the help of Figaro and a notary, Almaviva and Rosina manage to marry before Bartolo can prevent the wedding.

The leading soloists of the SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana ensemble, under the musical direction of Ayrton Desimpelaere and stage direction by Marin Blažević, present The Barber of Seville in a dynamic and contemporary semi-staged version with the orchestra on stage, allowing for a more direct and intense relationship between musicians, singers, and audience.

The visual component retains a strong theatrical dimension—through costumes, set design, stage lighting, and a clearly defined directorial concept—while the performance focuses on the proscenium, creating a concentrated and communicative stage space. This approach ensures greater clarity of the narrative, highlights acting expressiveness, and further emphasizes the virtuosity of Rossini’s music.

It is a contemporary and flexible format that preserves all essential features of both opera performance and concert presentation, while also allowing for interpretative freedom and adaptability to different performance spaces and stages.
