Since the founding of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, its staff has dedicated attention to documenting the progress and results of archaeological research, museum objects and their processing procedures, the condition of monuments and monumental complexes, and recording other museum activities, such as exhibitions and publishing.
The Documentation Department systematically creates, collects, organizes, and maintains documentation on museum materials and activities. Two collections, the Graphics Collection and the Postcard Collection, are inventoried and digitized, along with secondary documentation funds: the Slide Library, Documentation on the museum's founding and history, Documentary Drawings, Documents, the Photo Library, the Negative Registry, the Media Library, Exhibition Records, Publishing Activity Records, Field Report Records, Professional and Scientific Work Records, Event Records, the Map and Plan Collection, and the Professional Archive.

Since 2006, the documentation funds have been digitized, simplifying their use. The rich museum documentation is primarily used by the institution's professional staff, for the needs of professional and scientific research on specific topics, as well as for preparing presentations or texts for publication. The secondary documentation fund is also available to external users.
