The Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula is a public institution of national importance that operates in the area of Istria County and performs the tasks of preserving, researching, processing, protecting, and presenting the archaeological heritage of Istria from prehistory to the modern era. The museum cares for the archaeological findings and monuments of Pula and Istria.
Main Activities of the Museum
- Collection and Protection of Materials: The museum systematically collects, processes, and preserves archaeological findings and documentation, and is engaged in the protection of monuments and sites through professional and systematic archaeological research.
- Restoration and Conservation: It performs the restoration and conservation of archaeological objects made of various materials, such as ceramics, stone, metal, and glass, and prepares materials for exhibitions and the permanent collection.
- Presentation and Exhibitions: The museum organizes exhibitions and events, and manages permanent and temporary displays in its gallery spaces and satellite collections, such as the C8 Gallery, the Temple of Augustus, and the Nesactium archaeological park.
- Educational Activities: It pays special attention to educational projects, workshops, lectures, and guided tours for visitors of all ages, with an emphasis on cooperation with kindergartens, schools, and universities, and complementing school curricula.
- Research and Scientific Work: It conducts professional field research, archaeological surveys, prepares reports for the protection of sites, and collaborates with domestic and foreign museum and scientific institutions.
- Digitalization and Documentation: It maintains extensive museum documentation and library activities and is intensively digitizing materials for electronic processing and storage.
Governing Bodies of the Museum
- Management Board: The highest governing body of the museum. It has five members, three of whom are appointed by the founder (Ministry of Culture), one is elected by the professional staff from among their ranks, and one by all museum employees. The Management Board makes the most important decisions regarding the museum's operations.
- Director: The director of the museum is responsible for the overall business and legality of operations, represents the museum, and organizes the professional and operational work of all activities.
- Expert Council: An advisory body to the director, composed of a group of professional museum staff and employees who provide recommendations on professional and scientific matters related to the museum's work.
Ownership
Ownership of the museum and its property belongs to the Republic of Croatia, and management is carried out through the Ministry of Culture and founding rights based on the laws on museums and public institutions. The museum is entered in the court register of public institutions and operates in the area of Istria County. This structure ensures the transparency, legality, and public character of the museum's work, as well as constant supervision by state authorities over its operations.
