From 3rd to 6th October 2017, the fourth international expert conference for the protection of mosaic heritage of Southeast Europe will be held in the Croatian Chamber of Commerce – Regional Chamber Pula. The conference is a part of the project Southeast Europe Mosaics. It is financially supported by the Central European Initiative and is organized by the Croatian Conservation Institute in cooperation with the Archaeological Museum of Istria and the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade. The topic of this year’s conference is Presentation of Detached Mosaics on Movable Supports. Its aim is to discuss the problems of conservation-restoration techniques and past and present solutions in working with detached mosaics, as well as the challenges of presenting and caring for detached mosaics on movable supports. In time, technology and materials, as well as approaches to conservation, change, which is why this exchange of experience improves knowledge about the modern approach to mosaic protection and advances the conservation of mosaics.

The conference will consist of professional lectures, an exhibition of posters, and tours of mosaic sites in Pula and the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč. Apart from Croatian experts, lectures and presentations will be delivered by professionals from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, and the USA.

This conference is a continuation of the expansion of the network of experts working in the field of mosaic conservation-restoration, enhancing the international cooperation in professional training, as well as protection and presentation of mosaic heritage of Southeast Europe. In that way, the original idea of the Southeast Europe Mosaics project is developed. It was initiated as a regional project by the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade with the participation of representatives from countries of Southeast Europe. The main goal of the project is raising awareness about the need for a more organized protection of mosaic heritage by connecting experts and encouraging their cooperation.
